Mildred Evelyn Armstrong Carpenter, 99, of Athens, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at her residence.

She was born the second of eight children to the late Rob and Elsie Armstrong in McMinn County and was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Daniel Carpenter; two sons, Daniel Lewis Carpenter Jr. and Ronnie Allen Carpenter; granddaughter, Robin Lynn Carpenter; and five sisters, Ann Small, Margaret Addison, Virginia Jo Martin, Gladys Davis and Agnes Walden.

Soon after she graduated from Etowah High School in 1938, she met and married her husband, Daniel L. Carpenter. They lived in Los Angeles, Calif. for 35 years, spent time in Georgia, and then retired to McMinn County. She was a member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a great homemaker and for her inexorable love for her children and especially for the grandchild she raised, Tony Carpenter, and his three children, Joseph, Dylan, and Sam.

Words cannot express our gratitude to Joyce and James Grubb and Shelby Gunner for their devotion and being special friends to Mildred and her family.

Survivors include grandson, Tony Carpenter of Athens; three great-grandchildren, Joseph, Dylan, and Sam Carpenter; sister and brother-in-law, Bobbie and Kenny Dickson of Englewood; brother and sister-in-law, Kendall and Doris Armstrong of Englewood; and nieces and nephews, Brenda Hayes, Tony Farrell, Larry Davis, Judy Hennessee, Teresa Beasley, Steve and Mitch Dickson, Stacey Turley, Terry and Doug Armstrong, Karen Clark and Sharen Ray.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral with the Rev. Charla Sherbakoff officiating. Interment will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Dylan Carpenter, Larry Davis, James Grubb, Blake Powers, and Terry Armstrong. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home of Athens is in charge of arrangements.
