Martha Raymond was born in New York to Elisha Raymond, who moved west and became a hotelkeeper in Racine, Wisconsin. In 1850 Martha and her dashing husband John W Brown were living at the hotel. John was a Mariner.

Martha and John had four children in Wisconsin: Mary, Martha Frances, William Chester, and Grant Raymond. John became a well-known Lake Captain, particularly on Lake Michigan, and the family moved to Chicago where the children grew up. They maintained close ties in Wisconsin, and both Martha and John died there (she in 1890, he in 1893). Both are buried at Oak Woods in Chicago.
