James Madison Armstrong was one of the 13 known children born to William Madison Armstrong (1855 - 1938) and Nancy Jane Peveto (1867 - 1949), lifelong residents of Orange, Texas. At the age of 21 James married Sadie Richardson, age 20, on 25 July 1917 in Orange, Texas. They had one child in 1918, James Madison, Jr. The next year Sadie unexpectedly died of “blood poisoning,” and James and his baby son moved in with James Senior’s parents.

James married again around 1922 to Rose Mary Price, who was born in Louisiana and was living in Orange, Texas at the time of their marriage. James and Rose would remain married until James’ death in 1982. They would have at least three children together, William Price (b. 1923), Patricia Diane (b. 1935), and Thomas Harold (b. 1939). The family moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama from Orange, Texas in the late 1920’s, and this became their final home.
