A farmer that enlisted with his brother Exum in 1861, he fought at Seven Pines, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Gettysburg. Samuel signed up for one year, but accepted a fifty dollar bounty in 1862 that committed him for the duration of the war. He served Company E of the Ninth Virginia Infantry. He was sick in the hospital for two months in Winchester, returning to duty on 1 November 1862. On 1 March 1864 he was made corporal. When he was captured at Five Forks on 1 April 1865, he was a sergeant. Incarcerated at Hart's Island in New York Harbor, when he was released from Federal prison he returned to farming in Isle of Wight. Samuel stood five feet eleven inches and had dark hair and blue eyes.
