SAMUEL HATCH DROWNED
IN JORDAN AT SARATOGA

Samuel Hatch, 52, formerly of South Bountiful, now of Salt Lake, was drowned in the Jordan river at Saratoga, Sunday.

Mr. Hatch and his son, Melvin, 17, were fishing near the pumping station at the point where the Jordan flows from Utah lake, when the latter slipped into the stream. The father leaped into the river but was helpless in the rushing water with his fishing boots and immediately sank. Charles L. Ross of Salt Lake City rescued Melvin and attempted to save Mr. Hatch. An hour was spend trying to resuscitate Mr. Hatch but the work was futile. An effort is being made to secure recognition for Mr. Ross by the Carnegie Hero Fund commission at Pittsburg, Pa. for the heroism he displayed in the rescue.

The deceased is survived by a wife and seven children.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p. m., in the South Bountiful meeting house. The services were largely attended.
