As a young man in Kentucky, Julius worked as a horse exerciser at Douglas Park Racetrack in Louisville. He married Carmel Harger in 1918, the marriage was short lived. In 1920, Julius was living in Cincinnati, Ohio working as a clerk in the retail grocery business. Julius later moved to Chicago where he also worked with horses at the Sportsman's Park racetrack, and where his brother William was living. He lived at the Lexington Hotel in Chicago for about the last 20 years of his life.
