LEBANON State and county officers are looking for an automobile they
believe struck and killed George W. Manier, 78, early yesterday about five
miles east of here on U.S. 70N. The death brought to 10 the number of
weekend accidents
Frank Evetts. an agent for the Tennessee Bureau of Criminal
Identification, said the auto believed to have struck Manier is probably a
small metallic blue 1972 Ford. EVETTS said Manier, of Granville, Tenn., was
struck between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. in front of Johnson's Rest Home where he
was a patient. The body was discovered at about 5 a.m. by Robert Murray of
Carthage, Tenn., who was enroute home from his job at a Lebanon factory.
Fragments of automobile headlights were strewn near the point of impact.
Evetts said Mainer probably was struck by an eastbound automobile driven at
a high rate of speed. Mrs. A. R. Gossett, who operates the rest home, said
she saw Manier at about 4 a.m. She said he had dressed himself thinking
that the time was near daybreak. She said Manier returned to bed wearing
his day clothes but apparently arose later and left his room. Mrs. Gossett
said Manier never before had left the house during the 19 months he had
been a patient there. The body is at East Side Funeral Home where services
will he at 1 p.m. today. Burial will be in Granville Cemetery. Survivors
include a daughter, Mrs. Kathrrine Davis, Lebanon; a son, Wade Manier,
Carthage, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Burgess, Baxter, Tenn., Mrs.
Frank Blevins, Chattanooga, and Mrs. Millie Gentry, Hixson, Tenn.; nine
grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
