Shirley Fradette Hillyer of Maggie Valley passed away at The Homestead on October 28, 2014. She was a native of Michigan and moved to Maggie Valley in 1978. She was 87 years old. She was a devout Catholic her entire life and was a member of St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in Maggie Valley North Carolina. She was a Eucharistic Minister of the Church, and attended Mass several times a week. She was nominated by Father Denny and received the special honor of becoming affiliated with the Order of the Augustinian in 2010. Shirley was involved in several charitable organizations throughout her life and volunteering brought joy to her life. She assisted with: The Tourism Development Authority, MV Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer of MV Civic Assoc., Cancer Foundation, Haywood Hospital, MV Moonlight Race, Christmas in the Valley and shopped for the Children. The town of Maggie voted her Volunteer of the Year in 1985. Ms. Hillyer was very involved in her hometown Church, St. Henrys, and was a Member of Christian Mothers. She also was an active volunteer at schools, joining the PTA and volunteering to be room mother, as well as a playground aide, library assistant, teacher assistant, Cub Scout den Mother, Girl Scout leader, T-ball and Softball Coach. She won the prestigious Award “Mother of the Year” in 1972. Shirley was an avid believer of playing a very important role in saving lives. She was a Blood Donor, giving 31 gallons to the Red Cross. Sometimes they called upon her to help an individual who needed her particular type, and she was always happy to comply. Twinbrook Resort was a big part of her life for many years, diligently working with her sister and previous owner (Viola Henry). Shirley, in her later years, could be found volunteering and working at the Open Door and Second Blessings in Waynesville NC, giving her time and her welcoming spirit. Until just recently, at age 87, she had to give that up. She is preceded in death by her parents, Alphonse and Rosalie Fradette: husband Willie Buford Hillyer, daughter Karen Hillyer Murphy, son David Joseph Hillyer, Grandson Joseph E. Hillyer, Granddaughter Miranda Diane Hillyer, Three brothers, Lewis, Raymond and Ronald Fradette; Three sisters, Leola Emery, Ursula Johnson, and Viola Henry. Survivors include nine children; daughter Kathlyne R. Holt (Dave) of Maggie Valley NC, son Donald P. Hillyer (Diana) of Florida, son Robert W. Hillyer (Debbie) of Michigan, son Gary G. Hillyer (Elaine) of Georgia, daughter Suzanne M. Bean (John) of Tennessee, son James M. Hillyer (Mari) of Michigan, son Edward M. Hillyer (Cindy) of North Carolina, daughter Jeannette R. Barefoot (Larry) of South Carolina, daughter Patricia K. Hillyer of North Carolina; two sisters, Eileen Wilson (Bill) of Michigan, Leahbelle D’Anna (Nick) of Michigan; 27 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 8, at Saint Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in Maggie Valley with Father Cahill officiating.
