Catharine was the eldest of the children born to her parents, Thomas and Mary (Pence) Millard - of half English (her father) and German (her mother) heritage.

Catharine was known to have been a dedicated caregiver. She carried for her nephew-in-law Daniel Aaron who suffered from lung fever after his return from the Civil War in 1865; she took in and cared for her father Thomas Millard, Sr. in the mid-1870s until his death in 1876 and then raised her half-brother who was 11 when their dad died; she travelled to Kansas to care for her ailing daughter Matilda Flynt in 1881; she travelled to Franfurt, Indiana to care for her ailing daughter Laura Shores in 1885.

She belonged, for a number of years, to the community Christian Church (Later Mt. Zion) up until her passing in 1906.
