Thomas then moved to Iowa from Indiana before 1860 where he remarried in 1865 to Mary Jane McClain, younger than his then youngest daughter. Mary died in 1870 and Thomas returned to Indiana early in 1876 due to failing health to be cared for by his eldest daughter Catharine (Millard) Rickard until he died.
Although he has no surviving grave marker, his probate file indicates he was buried in Carroll County, probably near or beside his first wife.
