THREE LOSE LIVES IN CRASH
A Tobacco Township couple and a Sanford man were killed Friday evening when their cars crashed head-on about three miles north of Edenville. Mr. and Mrs. Asa Burton Carey, of Tobacco apparently died instantly Gladwin County sheriff's officers said. Ford Fisher, Jr., succumbed on the way to the hospital in an ambulance. Officers said marks on the pavement indicated that Fisher's car crossed over the centerline into the Carey car's lane about four feet. The vehicles crashed almost head-on. Mrs. Carey, 59, was driving their compact model car with Mr. Carey,64, as a passenger. They were heading north on M-30, in Billings Township, and Fisher, 31, was going south.
Sheriff Victor Edick and Deputy George Breault, who investigated the accident, said it occurred on a easy curve in the highway where there was no obstruction of the view. The crash occurred about 11:45 p.m. Double funeral services were held for Mr. and Mrs. Carey at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Gladwin Tuesday at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Ronald Miller, of West Branch officiated and burial was in the Dale Cemetery.
The former Mildred E. Wickard, was born on Nov. 4, 1904, in Carey, South Dakota, and was married to Asa B. Carey in Chicago in August, 1926. Members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gladwin, they had lived in Gladwin County 28 years. Mr. Carey was born in Harrison on July 23, 1898, and was a first class engineer in the Dow Chemical Company power plant at Midland. He was a World War I veteran.
Survivors include their children, three daughters, Mrs. Mary Nordenborck, of Muncie, Ind., Mrs. Martha Horton, of Sanford, and Mildred Carey, of Midland; two sons, Robert, of Midland, and James, of Richmond, Ind.; and 13 grandchildren. Mr. Carey is survived by three brothers, Ralph and Lyle, of Harrison, and Rex, of Flint; and a sister, Mrs. Winifred Hayward, of California; and Mrs. Carey leaves four brothers, Robert, of Woodstock, Ill., Walter, of St. Paul, Minn., Grant of Denver, Colo., and Eldo, of Rapid City, S.D.; and five sisters, Mrs. Lillian Fredrickson, of Canton, S.D., Mrs. Lena Maynard and Mrs. Alta Freund, of Woodstock, Ill., Mrs. Esther Ringler, of Fairchild, Calif., and Mrs. Martha Hansel, of San Diego, Calif.
The tradedy brought the county's fatal traffic toll to four this year.
