John Elwood Nurse was born on Dec. 3, 1921, in Blue Ridge (Chillicothe, Ill.), the second son of Hugh and Bertha (Colwell) Nurse.
He enlisted in the Army, serving in the Pacific Theatre as a Staff Sgt. during World War II.
Jack was employed with Illinois Bell Telephone for 42 years; he was in the Toll Department at the time of his retirement in 1981.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Beverley Birkhahn.
He is also survived by his three children, Linda Ekstam of Coal Valley, Brian (Sue) Nurse, of Silvis, and Deborah Heileman of Moline.
John was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Howard Nurse of Villa Park, and Tom Nurse of Peoria.
Private family services will be held at the Blue Ridge Methodist Church and Cemetery, Chillicothe, Ill.
