Car-Train Accident Kills NB Woman

LEIPSIC - A North Baltimore woman was killed Thursday night when the car she was riding in stalled on a railroad crossing and was struck by a backing train on Ohio 613 here.

Pronounced dead at the scene was Josephine Couch, 44, North Baltimore, a passenger in the auto driven by Deborah Book, 18, Jerry City Road, Bloomdale. She was uninjured. Putnam County Coroner Dr. James B. Overmier ruled the death was accidental and caused by a fractured neck.

According to the Lima Post of Ohio Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 10:15 p.m. when the Book vehicle stalled on the tracks of the Detroit Toledo & Ironton Railroad and was struck by the train. The patrol said the driver spotted the backing train and was able to get out of the auto, but Mrs. Couch could not.

FOSTORIA - Services for Mrs. Josephine Joanne Couch, 44, 339 Central Ave., North Baltimore, will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Harrold Funeral Home, Fostoria, the Rev. James Martin officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens, near Arcadia.

Visitation will be from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Mrs. Couch was killed in a car-train crash Thursday evening in Leipsic.

She was born Aug. 30, 1909, in Hatton to Jacob and Lena (Ireland) Hunt. She married George Couch, and he died in 1969.

Surviving are three sons, George Jr., Custar; Perry and Jody, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Albert (Laura) Aldaco, North Baltimore; Vicky, at home; a brother, Jacob, Reynoldsburg; four sisters, Mrs. Raymond Leimgruber, Hoytville; Mrs. Carl (Geraldine) Emmons, Fostoria; Marilyn, Risingsun; Mrs. John (Vondale) Harmon, Girton; three grandchildren.

Mrs. Couch was a member of Assembly of God Church in Fostoria.
