"Wayne Lawson Abernathey, age 38, a resident of Covington since 1945, died at 12:27 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at his home, 923 Liberty Street. He had been seriously ill with a brain tumor for the past four months.
Mr. Abernathey was born Oct. 7, 1918, in Fulton Township near Cates, the son of Harrison E. and Mary E. Lawson Abernathey. He was married Nov. 16, 1940 to Carmen Dale Hines, who survives. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Covington, and the Fulton Banta Post 291, American Legion of Covington.
He grew up in the Cates community and was graduated from the Perrysville High School. He attended Indiana Central College, Indianapolis, and spent three years in the Air Force during World War II. He was a sergeant and was stationed with the 3501st Army Air Field Base Unit at Boca Raton, Fla. He received his discharge from the service in 1945 and since then had been engaged in the general trucking business.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: one daughter, Waynette Dale; his mother; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and an infant brother.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Glenn Ray, pastor, officiated and burial, with the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in charge, was in Lower Mound Cemetery.
