OBITUARIES
Former Provo City Commissioner Dies

Joseph Henry Swapp, 86, 745 N. 3rd E., Provo, former Provo City commissioner, died Wednesday at a Provo hospital of causes incident to age. He was born July 2, 1884, in Lung, N.M., to Archibald & Sorepta Luticia Jolley-Swapp.
He married Editha Farnsworth Oct. 9, 1908, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died March 20, 1932. He then married Mary Hartley Perry Huff on Dec. 29, 1937, in Nephi.
He moved with his parents as a boy to Glendale, Utah, where he received his early education. He served an LDS mission to the Eastern States. Five days after his first marriage he was made Bishop of the Glendale Ward.
In 1919 they moved to Provo to educate their children. From 1942 to 1946 he was a Provo City Commissioner. Until 1937 he was in the sheep and wool industry. He had worked as an attendant at the Utah State Hospital and also for Deseret Industries.
For two years he was a Provo City School crossing guard, until retiring at the age of 72. In Provo he was counselor in the Fifth Ward Bishopric and was also active in the Manavu Ward, serving as building commissioner, ward teacher, temple worker, and genealogical worker. He was a High Priest at the time of his death.
Mr. Swapp was a member of the Provo Chamber of Commerce and he especially enjoyed being in the outdoors and living in his canyon home.
Survivors include his widow; four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Leonard (Farris) Jolley, Corvallis, Ore.; Mrs. Paul S. (Marva) Giannola, Millbrea, Calif.; Mrs. Andrew (Helen) SZorensen, Brigham City; Mrs. West E. (Sandra) Whatcott, St. Louis, Mo.; Morris F. Swapp, Bountiful; Frank F. Swapp, Houston, Tex.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two stepsons and one stepdaughter, Alan M. Perry, Ogden; Kenneth D. Huff, Orem; Mrs. Harwood O. (Inez) Hindmarsh, Provo; one brother and one sister, Preston Swapp, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Warren (Louie)Olson, Montebello, Calif.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Manavu LDS Ward Chapel, 395 E. 6th N., with Bishop John R. Halliday officiating. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday until 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
