John was a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 36 years. He married Elinor ("Ellie") Laura Kohrs in 1944 and they raised three daughters in Denver. After Ellie's death in 1981, he met Tee, the widow of another agent, through their mutual leadership work with the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI. In 1984 he married Telise ("Tee") Elizabeth Courville Johnsen and retired to San Antonio.
John and Tee had a wonderful 22 years together, residing at 117 Ridgemont Avenue. They were active in civic and charitable organizations, enjoyed traveling, and were wonderful hosts to visiting friends and family.
John was a 1940 graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. Following graduation, he entered the FBI as a messenger in the Communications Section. After studying at Georgetown University Law School, he was appointed a special agent in 1942. His assignments included New Haven, New York, and Denver, where he served as resident agent and then field supervisor. He retired on April 23, 1976.
He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Denver and then of First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. He was active in the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI (serving on the National Board of Directors representing the South Central Region) and in the San Antonio Kiwanis Club.
John was survived by his beloved wife, Telise; and his three daughters Linda Broughton Mendez of Denver, Colorado, Sally Broughton Cutler of Prescott, Arizona, and Judy Broughton Gonzales of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and stepchildren Telise Johnsen Berns of Madison, Wisconsin and Dr. Mark Johnsen of Bulverde, Texas.
