Frances graduated from the University of Arkansas and became a teacher, then volunteered for the Navy WAVES during World War II, serving in both the US and North Africa. She was commissioned in February 1944 and was active duty until 1957, remaining in the Navy Reserve until 1973 to complete 30 years of Navy service. In 1948, Lieutenant Broughton was one of the WAVE officers selected for transfer to the regular Navy. Her post-WWII tours included Naval Air Station Anacostia (DC), WAVE Recruit Training Command (Great Lakes, IL), Bureau of Ships (DC), Naval Air Station Pensacola (FL), and Naval Air Station Dallas (TX).
Frances married George Morse, a Navy Chief Warrant Officer, at First Presbyterian Church in Warren, Arkansas (her home church) in May 1943. She and George delighted in travel and were wonderfully entertaining hosts after their retirement to their home on Lake Harris near Leesburg, Florida where they kept a camel saddle (and other treasures from their postings) in the living room. She was a member of the Retired Officers Association and of the First Presbyterian Church of Leesburg. She became ill and passed away during a Christmas holiday visit to her sister-in-law's home in Rock Hill, SC.
A proud redhead, Frances and her three brothers were all markedly tall. While she never had children, she was a warm and loving aunt and great aunt, always interested and encouraging to her nieces and nephews and is sorely missed.
