Harrison Gard was the son of Ephraim Lyon Gard and Susannah Sutton. There is discrepancy on what his date of birth was, but this memorial's date of birth is calculated from his Declaration of Volunteer Recruit for the Civil War in September 1864 where he gave his age as 40 years and 6 months, placing his birth about March 1824. However, it is believed he lied about his age at the time of enlistment, taking ten years off his age, so that he could serve. His age of death inscribed as 78 years, 10 months, and 25 days on his headstone would give an estimated date of birth as 28 Feb 1813. One other date found on Ancestry in various trees is 30 April 1815.

His first wife was Serena "Sarah" Cook. Research appears to suggest they were the parents of:

Frances Gard, b. ~1834, MO
Polly Ann Gard, b. ~1841, IL (married Enoch Watts in Sangamon Co., IL in October 1855)
David Sherman Gard, b. ~1843, MO
Sarah Letta Gard, b. ~1849, IL (married Daniel Mock)
Lucinda Gard, b.~1853, IL (married Robert Franklin Mock)
W. Christopher Gard, b. ~1855, IL
Hester Jane Gard, b.~1858, IL

Sometime before 1866, Harrison's first wife, Serena Cook Gard, must have died, as he's married with a four year old child to Barbara A. Gard in the 1870 census. Research suggests they had the following children:

Susan Ann Gard, b. Nov 1866, MO (married William Arnold)
Ephraim Grant Gard, b. 28 Mar 1869, Morgan Co., MO
Mary K. Gard, b.~1872, MO
Sarina Irene Gard, b. 22 Apr 1879, MO (married Joseph C. Altemueller)
