William was the son of John C. Calfee (son of William Calfee and Nancy Davis) and Virginia Anna Miller Calfee. He married Sarah Ann Haughton. In 1860, William lived with relatives, not parents, in Mercer County, VA (now WV). He enlisted in the 11th Battalion Reserves, CO D, on April 23, 1864, during the Civil War. He was a laborer in 1870 in Ft. Chiswell, Wythe Co., VA. In 1880, he was a lead miner in Joplin, MO, and in 1900 a "Miner Jack". William was a real estate salesman in 1910. He is mentioned in "The Story of Joplin," by Dolph Shaner of New York, as being on the roster of members of the Old Settlers Association, each having settled in Joplin before 1876. He died of typhoid fever.
