Lori-Ann Shake, the 26-year-old Maspeth woman who was awaiting a triple-transplant operation to replace her diseased heart and lungs, has lost her valiant battle for life. "In the end, it was quick and merciful," Lori-Ann's mother, Kathleen Phelan, said yesterday. "Apparently, her heart just gave out" Lori-Ann died Sunday morning' at the City Hospital Center at Elmhurst, a hospital spokesman said. An autopsy performed yesterday attributed the cause of death to complications from "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease," the spokesman said. Lori-Ann had been in the intensive-care unit at Elmhurst since last October. On Dec. 29, her mother received word that the State Health Department would approve, Medicaid payments for the transplant operation that .might have saved Lori-Ann's life.
