Mrs. Linda Patricia Tevis Smith of Milam died Friday February 1, 2019 in San Augustine, TX. She was born August 12, 1940 in Beaumont, Texas and was 78 years of age. There will be a visitation of family and friends Tuesday, February 5th from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Starr Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, February 6th, at St Pius Catholic Church with burial to follow in Fairmount Cemetery.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Gladys Parks Tevis and Floyd Tevis; her sisters, Nelwyn Arena and Floy Marie “Dutta” Hayes, Thelma Tervis Kuritz, and Katherine McCormack (who passed just hours before Linda). She is survived by her husband Truett Smith of Milam, daughters Julie Topolski and her husband Leonard of Pearland, TX and Stephanie Carroll and her husband Bob of Austin, TX, sisters Gloria Kuritz of Gonzales, LA and Merlene Corley and her husband, Rex of Plano, TX, grandchildren Brandon & Trevor Topolski of Pearland, TX and Lauren and Emily Carroll of Austin, TX as well as her beloved cat Brandy.
Linda was a descendant of Noah and Nancy Tevis, the first known Anglo-Americans to settle what is now known as Beaumont. They received a Spanish land grant totalling 2200 acres in 1825 and over the years donated certain properties to the city of Beaumont for public use.
She attended St. Anthony High School in Beaumont, graduating in 1958. The highlight of her high school years was meeting her devoted husband of 58 plus years, Walter Truett Smith. They resided in Beaumont and Clear Lake City retiring to Milam in 1998.
Linda was a dedicated mother and grandmother and kept us all well fed. Many would agree her biggest success was her baking! She won first place more than once at Milam Settlers’ Day. Her made from scratch Banana Pudding was requested regularly at many social gatherings. We will be forever grateful to her for teaching us how to make the best homemade cookies, cakes, pie crusts, cast iron cornbread, etc. All four grandkids spent many hours baking with her. A common request was homemade waffles.
Gardening was a constant throughout Linda’s life, especially her immaculate flower beds but also productive vegetable gardens. She always enjoyed a good crossword or jumble puzzle. And, oh the hours we spent poring over many jigsaw puzzles into the wee hours of the night!
Many people have been touched by her kindness and we are especially thankful for all the kind words and prayers you’ve shared with us.
