In Pendleton County, Kentucky, he married Miss Mary Polly Caldwell on October 30, 1823. [There is some indication that he may have previously married a woman named Sally Waters in October of 1822 in Campbell County, KY, but this marriage may be erroneously ascribed to him (rather than another Austin Hightower), or the bride died shortly after the wedding.]
Sometime between 1836 and 1841, Austin, his wife and three of his children moved from Kentucky to Illinois, which comports with the time frame of his parents' move to that location.
Austin's father died in Ursa when Austin's youngest child was 10 months old, in 1845. His mother, Frances, held on for another 10 years. They are both buried in Denson Pioneer Cemetery in Ursa Township.
Austin had five children that we know of. Their first three children were born in Kentucky. That last two were born in Illinois. They were:
Elizabeth, b. 1827
Frances A., b. Feb 1833
William, b. 1836
Susan Caldwell, b. Feb 3, 1841
Sarah M., b. Oct 1844
Elizabeth went on to marry Thomas Y. Trimble and have 3 children. [Thomas was famously murdered on May 31, 1865, and his unusual tombstone in the Denson Pioneer cemetery reads: "In memory of Tho's Y Trimble for 12 years treas of Marcelline Lodge No 114 A.F. & A.M. - Born Nov 6, 1819 - Was slain by the murderous hand of a Ruffian and Outlaw - May 31, 1865" On top of the marble tombstone is the master mason's symbol.]
Frances married Chauncy F. Quigg and had 5 children.
William married Mary Jane Sims and had 3 children
Susan married first John D. Anderson, having two children with him, and second, James Harvey Shannon (the widower of her first cousin, once removed.)
Sarah married George Washington H. Wade and had 2 children by him
In the 1850 census, Austin is described as a farmer, in 1860 he is a merchant, and in 1870 there is no occupation listed. He died early in 1880 and does not appear in that census. His widow is living with their widowed daughter, Susan Anderson, and granddaughter, Emma. Four years later, in October of 1884, Austin's wife died.
Austin's descendants are numerous. Some remained in Illinois. Others spread out across the western states.
Austin and his wife are buried in the Denson Pioneer Cemetery in Ursa, along with his parents and other relatives.
