The son of John & Rebecca (Pague) Breckenridge, in 1860 he was a labore living with and/or working for master wagon maker John Gibler in Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, his obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent claims, "When the War of the Rebellion broke out, he enlisted in Company F, 1st Battalion, Two Hundred and First Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry . . . and reenlisted in Company K, Twentieth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers." Not a word of that is true. The first mentioned organization never existed, he never served with the second organization, and he did not enlist when the war "broke out." His actual two terms of service were as follows:

1. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Newville, Cumberland County, June 20, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 26 as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion of Infantry Militia, and honorably discharged with his company January 9, 1864. He is in the muster roll as "Breckenridge."

2. Enlisted at the still stated age of eighteen in Harrisburg August 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 25 as a private with Co, K, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 22, 1865. He is in the company register as "Breckenridge."

He married Caroline Amelia "Carrie" Hummel April 17, 1870, in Harrisburg and fathered Alfred (b. @1871), John Frederick (b. @1873), Valentine Hummel (b. 03/07/76), and John Givler (b. 12/24/80). After the war, he worked at a variety of occupations, including saddler, grocer, insurance & real estate agent, and served as alderman for the city of Harrisburg. He was a member of Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R.. He is in the 1870 census as "Brickenridge," but his obituaries use "Brackenridge."
