Son of John and Margaret (Hiatt) Cravens, widow of William Dyer, who married in Rockingham, Virginia in 1759. Believed to have attended Rush Medical College in Philadelphia (anecdotal, no documentation located). Married Mary "Polly" Nickel in Crook's Creek Presbyterian Church, Rockingham County, VA, on Nov. 30, 1790. They were early residents of Harrisonburg, Virginia. Served in the Virginia Commonwealth Senate from 1831-1833. Appear to have been living with their son, James Harrison Craven, during the 1840 US Census. Burial in Craven Cemetery is not 100% guaranteed, due to lack of records.
