US Congressman. A native of Rockingham County, Virginia, he served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 83rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Elected to represent Indiana's 4th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1841 to 1843. He also served as a Member of the Indiana State House of Representatives from 1831 to 1837, and 1846 to 1847, Member of the Indiana State Senate from 1839 to 1841, and as a Presidential Elector from Indiana in 1840 (but defeated in 1848 and 1852).
