Modest and retiring while for fifteen years she has given unstintingly of her time to teach girls and mothers at the Community House how to sew for themselves and their families, Mrs. Fred H. Niemeier 1936 Highley Avenue SE, is today named an Unsung Heroine of Cedar Rapids by the Conopus Club.
Since its inception in 1921 Mrs. Niemeier has been a board member of the Jane Boyd Community House. An expert seamstress, she has used her talent to help others help themselves. Her assistance has not been limited to the sewing classes, for scores of women have sought her sound kindly advice when in trouble. White or colored, they are sure of a welcome in her home when needing assistance. Mrs. Niemeier has also been active in the King's Daughters sewing projects for the needy.
Her sympathies embraced the Mesquakie Indians at Tama, too. Discovering that some were in need she began collecting clothes for them from friends who were invited to bring their donations to her residence. Every three months the call goes out for help for the Indians. Food, clothing and gay beads are forthcoming. Source:Cedar Rapids Gazette Sunday March 22, 1936
