Emmett Nelson Carter, age 90, died May 28, 2007. He was born February 4, 1917 in Canton, Oklahoma to John and Elva Carter. He earned a BS degree in Agriculture Economics from Oklahoma A&M College in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in February, 1942. Emmett served more than two years overseas where he fought in Guadalcanal and led a surveillance team to the Rennell Islands. He was discharged as a Captain in 1945. Emmett operated a dairy farm north of Purcell for many years. He helped organize the Central Oklahoma Milk Producers Association. He was very active in the American Dairy Association serving as State President for eight years, National VP and National President. In 1972, Progressive Farmer Magazine named him Man of the Year in Oklahoma Agriculture. He was active in the Trinity Methodist Church of Purcell, OK, serving in various leadership positions. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Brooks Carter; siblings, Ruth Wyatt and Russell Carter. He is survived by brother, John of Sentinel, OK; sister, Marie of Simsboro, LA; brother, Dean and wife Edith of Green Cove Springs, FL; son, Emmett D. Carter and wife Linda of Edmond, OK; daughter, Judy Carter of Corpus Christi, TX; son, Paul and wife Janet of Norman, OK; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Acts 2 United Methodist Church, 4848 W. Covell, Edmond, OK, at 2 PM, Thursday, May 31, 2007. Memorial donations may be sent to Acts 2 UMC. Services are under the direction of the Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond, OK.
