Born as Mariah Luisa, the family photo has her name as Marie Louise which is a name of French origin as was her mother Harriet’s surname Lamar. Her given name evolved into Mary Louise when she resided with her older sister Martha at age 12.

Mariah’s father was Richard Marshall (R.M.) Booker, 1815-1853, age 38 at his death. Mariah was 5 years old when her father died.

He descended from Captain Richard Booker born 1640 in Nottingham, England. He immigrated to Virginia in 1667.
Richard’s son Col. Edward Booker, Sr was a Virginia plantation owner and had 15 Negro slaves when he died. His grandson, Richard Marot Booker moved to Shelbyville, Kentucky after the birth of his son Edward M in 1877. Edward was Mariah’s Grandfather who died in 1834 before she was born.

She had 5 older siblings Martha, Benjamin F, Eliza, Lucy, and Richard.

Her mother remarried to Abraham Miller after her father’s death. They had two children who died as infants. Her mother died shortly after the 2nd child in 1858. Her stepfather Abraham Miller died in 1859. Mariah was 12 years old. and lived with her older sister Martha Booker Woolfolk per the 1860 Census.

Mariah went by her nickname “Rolla” and married John Cone Dunlap in Scottville, Macoupin County Illinois in 1866, age 19.

They had 2 daughters Kent Rolla and Vena Mary. In 1870, they resided near Rolla’s brother Benjamin F Miller (B.F.), a merchant in Scottville, Illinois with John’s sister Amanda and brothers Tom and Tim, still minors.

In May 1875, they moved to Excelsior, Minnesota so John could benefit from a healthier climate. Unfortunately John died in November that year from consumption (aka TB).

Rolla took the girls to Macoupin County, Illinois possibly to stay with family.

She died from consumption in October, 1877 in Excelsior, MN.

Upon her death, daughters Kent Rolla and Vena were sent to guardians in Virden, Illinois and made wards of Macoupin County, and lived with the family of a retired sheriff Seymour Wilcox, at ages 10 and 7.

They were living in 1880 with the Wilcox family of 4 daughters in Virden, IL. Later Vena went to Excelsior, Minnesota to live with her uncle, Timothy Dunlap per 1885 Census at age 16.
