Thomas Hyland, son of Patrick and Bridget (Quinn) Hyland, was born in July 1845 in Ballinrobe, County Mayo, Ireland. At the age of 3, he settled with his family in St. Paul, Minn. after fleeing Ireland's famines during the near- exodus of the 1840's. The family went in 1856 by ox team to the town of Cedar Lake and took up a homestead claim, the land of which included a Sioux Native American passage from nearby Shakopee. That year, a Sioux trail from Shakopee ran through the farm, and the family assisted one wounded Sioux warrior, treating his injuries after a battle with the Chippewa. In 1875, Thomas married Illinois native Margaret Kiley. Together, they had 10 children: sons John J., Harry E., Patrick J., Thomas I. and Francis L.; and daughters Delia, Catherine, Mary, Margaret and Julia. The Hylands lived on the Cedar Lake farm until 1904, when they moved to Minneapolis. In the eight years preceding the move, Thomas served eight years as a commissioner for Scott County, Minn. Thomas' wife Margaret died in September 1919 at the age of 66, and Thomas died 11 years later at the age of 85 on May 15, 1930.
