Adaire Anne Toms, age 83, of York, NE passed away surrounded by her family Thursday, December 27, 2018 in Lincoln, NE. She was born October 16, 1935 in Hastings, NE to Dr. James M and Evelyn Cobb King. She was baptized and confirmed at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1953 and Hastings College in 1957. For just short of 35 years, she taught elementary school in Hastings, Lexington, and York (at York Public Schools, Emmanuel Lutheran School, and St. Joseph Catholic School) where she taught special reading classes, 2nd and 3rd grade, and music.

She was married to Chas. H. “Tommy” Toms, Jr. on May 4, 1956, after being set up on a blind date the previous October by Tommy’s brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Carol.

She was a 50 year member of York First United Presbyterian Church where she was a past elder, deacon, and session member, as well as, choir member for decades. Adaire was known for her singing, sharing her voice with the Yorkshire Playhouse in numerous productions as an actor. In her time with the Playhouse, she served on the board of directors, as well as a director and make-up artist. She also taught voice lessons to dozens of students in the York area.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Tommy of York; children: Vicki (Mick) Northrop of Hastings, Cindi (Steve) Nickel of York, Kristi (Marc) Felix of Lincoln, NE, Tommy (Dee) Toms of Hastings, and Cathy (Dale) Davis of Hastings; grandchildren: Ben Northrop and Phil Northrop (Savanna Lauby) of York, Jamey (Shanda) Northrop of Port St. Lucie, FL, Caleb Northrop of New Haven, CT, Gregg (Lindsay) Heiden and Jillian (Brady) Fickenscher of York, Jon (Jade) Felix of Englewood, CO, Eliza Felix of Lincoln, NE, C.J. (Kelsey) Toms and A.J. Toms of Hastings, Nicki Behmer (Josh Popp) of Lincoln, Wyatt (Ryanna Odom) Davis of Lincoln, Annie Davis of Hastings, Gina (Tyler) Rains of Lincoln, Julie Nickel of Lincoln, and Andy (Alison) Nickel of Bennett, NE; great grandbabies: Katelynn and Lauryn Northrop of Port St. Lucie, FL, Silas Northrop of York, Madelyn and Kendall Heiden of York, Jude and Brynnlee Fickenscher of York, Hayden and Ian Behmer of Lincoln; and Cullen Rains and Jack Adams of Lincoln. She is also survived by her brother Vaughan King of McCook, NE, sisters-in-law Jane Bovey of Kearney, NE and Linda Toms of York; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Terry, sister-in-law Linda King, special uncle Loren King, and a host of other family members.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church, York with the Reverend Dr. Michael Eickhoff officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, York. In keeping with our wife and mom’s bright, glittery, sparkling personality, we request everyone wear your bright and glittery best to her service.

Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church Foundation or the family for Fine Arts and Education Scholarships at Hastings High School and Hastings College.

Visitation will be held from 1-8:00 p.m., Wednesday with her family greeting friends from 6-7:30 p.m., later that evening at the mortuary.
