FUNERAL SERVICES WERE AT BETHEL FOR ZIBA NEWTON
Funeral services for Ziba Newton of the Hollinger community were conducted Saturday, May 13th, 1961, from the Bethel church. Reverend Dan Burger officated at the last rites.
Ziba, son of Abel S. and Maria Jane Newton was born in Hooksburg,Morgan County, Ohio, on May 23 1873 and passed away at the McCook hospital May 11, 1961 at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 18 days.
Ziba came to Nebraska in 1865 with his widowed mother, his brothers and sisters. He was the ninth in a family of 12 children. They resided on the Newton farmstead. He attended rural school and was graduated in 1894 with the second class to be graduated from Beaver City high school.
He was united in marriage with Gertrude Arford on April 23, 1899 at Stamford, Nebraska, 62 years ago. To this union was born five children. The family resided 3 miles west of Stamford for several years while Ziba was engaged in farming and teaching school. In 1905 they moved to Hollinger where Ziba built and operated the general store for several years. While living in Hollinger, he also engaged in the grain buying business, served as Depot Agent and Post Master for 23 years. He was a merchant for 42 years. He retired from the post office and general store in 1943. In 1959 he and his wife moved to Oxford where theylwere residing at the time of his death.
He has long been a member of the United Brethren Church and was always active in church affairs.
He was a lover of poetry and enjoyed reciting at public gatherings. His other hobbies were fishing, gardening and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and five brothers.
He is serviced by his wife, Gertrude, three sons; Dr. Raymond, Laguna Beach, California; Dr. Lyle, St. Petersburg, Florida, and Walter, San Francisco, California; twin daughters; Mrs. Lela DuPre of Alexandria, Virginia; and Mrs. Leta Jackson of Ocean Side, California; one brother, Thomas F. of Lincoln, Nebraska; seven grandchildren pne great grandchild, many other relatives and a host of friends.
Ziba was a loving, kind and considerate husband and father and could truly be classed as The Good Neighbor.
It goes without saying that he will be greatly missed by his family, neighbors, friends and everyone who knew him.
Music for the service was furnished by a quartet of Reverend Dayton Cundiff, Reverend William Kovar, Clarke Kelley and Ray Hodson. They sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond the Sunset". The men were accompanied by G. W. Shafer, Jr.
Interment was made in the Deaver Cemetery. Pallbearers were Cecil Hall, Lowell Hall, John Baker, Clinton Schuntz, Herman Keiser and Gayle Woodruff,
