Coretta graduated from Webster High School in Tulsa in 1950 and later attended Baptist Bible College in New York. On April 8, 1961, she married the love of her life, Bill Newton, and they made their home in Welling, where the family operated a dairy farm for many years. The couple had three sons: Larry Dale, Allen and Mike.
In 1968, she began working at Cook Insurance, which later became Bardell & Bardell, in Tahlequah, and she continued working there for 46 years, retiring in 2014.
Coretta became a member of Welling General Baptist Church on April 27, 1969, and was a faithful member of her Sunday school class and the women’s mission group. She also enjoyed teaching children’s Sunday school classes in her earlier years, and later, she participated in the Cherokee Home Association of General Baptists, serving in various roles. She loved gospel music, especially traditional hymns.
She was known for her sewing abilities, which she used to make pillows, blankets and clothing for friends and family. She was also known for her homemade apple pies, which she often baked for family and friends and for church functions. Though she was known by many to be a quiet-but-powerful servant of the Lord, she also raised three boys, so she, too, could be a bit ornery when necessary. Her playful mischief also came in handy for spending time with her grandchildren later in life.
Coretta is preceded in death by her parents; her four brothers, Sonny Boy, Owen, Wayne and Donald; her three sisters, Regina, Patty and Faye; her husband, Bill; and her son, Mike.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Larry Dale Newton and his wife, Cathy, of Tahlequah, and Allen Newton and his wife, Tammy, of Welling; grandchildren, Josh Newton and his wife, Michelle, Dustin Newton, Rusty Harris, Claire Jones, Lauren Jones, Will Newton, Joyce Newton, Delaney Newton, Turner Newton, Kristin Walker and her husband, Justin, and Kelli Butler; six great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Services will be Monday, Dec. 31, at 10 a.m. at Green Country Funeral Home in Tahlequah with Brother J.D. Rozell officiating. Internment will follow at Tahlequah City Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 30, from 2-4 p.m. at Green Country Funeral Home.
