Born in Nowata, OK on January 7, 1953 to William Paul and Margaret June (Patton) Dawes; Paula was named after her daddy and Uncle Gene, who was killed in action in World War II. She was raised and educated in the Alluwe area and attended Alluwe Public Schools. Paula loved to tell stories about her school days, and was quick to throw in a few stories about her older brother’s school days as well. She knew her older brothers were watching out for her when she was in school; rest assured no one messed with Paula.

An accomplished seamstress, there was nothing that Paula could not make, alter, or fix. She enjoyed making Barbie clothes, embroidering, and t-shirts. She tried several times working in different sewing factories but could never develop the mind set of just get it done quickly. Paula wanted it done right no matter how long it took. She loved the outdoors and would go fishing a lot. The funny thing is, her family said she never fished just enjoyed being outside. History was another interest of Paula’s and she was glad to help Community Options here in Chelsea when they put out their history-based publication. It’s worthy of noting that Paula’s ancestry itself is deep in Cherokee Indian history. Her grandmother and grandfather were some of the original founders of the community in Grove, OK called Cow Skin Prairie.

Paula loved children and although she was unable to have any of her own; she utilized those motherly instincts with her fur baby, Sassy. Her teacup Chihuahua has a bit of Paula’s attitude of not putting up with non-sense. Anyone that knew Paula knew she had an appreciation for music. The Monkeys and Elvis Presley were her favorites and not necessarily in that order. Road trips with her sister-cousin, Kathie, were a treat. They would both jump in the car with no destination in mind; they were just going. If they saw a billboard along the way advertising something, that is where they headed. Many times not liking the place after they arrived, they just headed out for the next point of interest.

This sister, aunt, cousin, and friend will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Paula is survived by her brother, Garry Crawford and wife Joyce, nieces, Terri Lynne Schell and Debbie Petzolt, nephews, Jason W. Crawford, Michael Crawford, and Scott Crawford, sister-cousin, Kathie Manning and husband Marty, cousins, Jeri Lynn Roberts, Charlene Norris, Danny Corlett, Brad Grissom, and Brian Grissom. Paula was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Larry Brown.
