Earle Powell Bursum, age 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Earle was born in Big Spring, TX on April 1, 1934 to Earl Baylos and Jane (Bounds) Powell.
Earle has resided in Socorro since 1966.
Before moving to Socorro, Earle graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1958 with a Bachelor's Degree in History. On December 27, 1958, she married her best friend, Holm Olaf Bursum III. Earle then stayed home for many years, raising her children along with staying involved with many organizations around Socorro and the State of New Mexico.
Earle was a member of the Museum of NM Board of Regents for 12 years, a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Socorro, the Lew Wallace Chapter - Daughter of American Revolution, The Young Republicans, and the Jr. League of Albuquerque. Earle was a "Golfers Golfer". Earle knew all the ins and outs of the sport and served as a Director of the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association - District 2. Earle enjoyed playing, and also officiating. There was not a rule or regulation, Earle did not know. Earle and Holm played many couples tournaments, and yes, she carried Holm through most of them. Together they won many championships.
Earle's Legacy will live on with the El Camino Real International Heritage Center Foundation. Earle was instrumental with the planning, development and building the Heritage Center. Earle proudly dedicated 12 years and served as an advisor and was the historical "librarian" for her beloved gift shop at the Center. Earle also left her mark at the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Socorro. The Church held a soft spot in her heart. Her generous patronage was dedicated to the stained glass window that is still in the church today.
Earle was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Edgar Lay Powell and her beloved dog, Bandit.
