Joann P. Abel of Hellertown came to the end of her earthly journey on Wednesday, November 28, 2018. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 18, 1928, to Paul D. Peters and Estella G. (Dickson) Peters. Her husband, Drewe N. Abel Sr. preceded her in death on June 3, 2005. They shared 52 wonderful years of marriage.
Joann was a graduate of Rye High School in Rye, NY, Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, and Cedar Crest College where she earned her B.S.N. degree. As an R.N., she enjoyed her nursing career for over 32 years, retiring as Head Nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. She was a member of the First United Church of Christ of Hellertown where she served in the past as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, Elder and President of Consistory, and helped with computing for many years, as well as faithfully serving as a Guild member. During her time in Hellertown, she was past Vice President of the Hellertown Women's Club, Treasurer of the Saucon Valley Garden Club and a member of the Hellertown Historical Society, Springtown Historical Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Gardening, genealogy research and her love of animals brought her great pleasure, but her greatest love and happiness in her life was her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy J. Talarico, wife of Joseph Talarico of Cherry Hill, NJ. Son, Drewe (Buck) N. Abel Jr., husband of Katherine H. Abel of Rocky Mount, NC along with grand children, Erin, Joey and Kristen and great grandchildren, Jania, Luca and Sloane; brother Mark, (Fran) of Roanoke VA, and many other nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband Drewe Sr., daughter Diane, and sister Margaret.
Private services will be held at the convenience of her family.
