During the Civil War Guerrilla raids, terrorized the county, particularly those by the Confederate Champ Ferguson. On one occasion Ferguson and some of his men dressed themselves as Union soldiers and slipped into Morgan County to observe the enemy. Ferguson extracted information from D. S. Lavender, identified him as a Union man, and proceeded to Wartburg to spy on the Yankee guards. The next day, Ferguson attacked in force and captured the detachment. In the process of withdrawing, the guerrillas rode by Lavenders place and when he objected to their horses being driven into his cornfield.murdered him in his yard.
