This cemetery is located in the Stockton State Park of Lake Stockton.

The land on which it is located was first patented by Edmund G. Kington on September 1, 1858.

The Kington family shows 7 members in the 1860 census. The head of the family is Nicholas Kington, age 59,farmer,born in Virginia.

Members are Elizabeth,age 30; George J.,age 36; Mary J.,age 24; Charles C.,age 22; Salina,age 24 and Penelope,age 16. All are born in Tennessee.

This family, in the 1850 census, was living in West Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia. This borders the Tennessee state line next to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Some family history shows that Nicholas died in Missouri. There appears to be more graves in this cemetery.

This Penelope(not to be confused with daughter Penelope), would of been Nicholas's wife. The Cedar County Cemetery Book shows a death date of 1863. The 1860 census does not show a female of this age in the census (born 1805, would of been 55).

Nicholas Kington's daughter Armilda Kington married John Gordon on April 13, 1860. She is buried less than 2 miles away in the Gordon Cemetery.

In July, 1863 there was a conflict between the Union defenders of Stockton and a Confederate raiding party headed by Colonel Livingston. Two local Unionists were killed, one of the two being a George Kingston. As there are no known families residing in Cedar County named Kingston, this man could belong to the Kington family.

Selina Kington, another daughter of Nicholas and Penelope Kington, is also buried in the Gordon Cemetery with her sister Armilda Kington Gordon. However, her name is listed as Lina Kingston. Lina being the shorten version of Selina, with Kington being misspelled on the gravestone and the death certificate as Kingston.

There are Cedar County Probate Court actions around 1880 for Francis Kington and also one for H.G. Kington. At that time an 80 acre tract located around 2 miles north of the cemetery was in the Kington name. Francis Kington is listed in the 1870 census living with his sister Armilda and her husband John Gordon.

Error on 1858 death date. I found that she died in Bradley County, TN in 1853 but buried in MO.

Also NJ Kington had a brother named George.

Penelope was the oldest daughter and child of DS Lavender of Morgan County TN. She was born around 1797 in North Carolina. She married NJ Kington. Apparently, there was a land dispute between the Kington family, so some of the families moved to GA and some to MO. Nicholas was the son of John Kington and Eleanor Caffrey. He was born in 1801. I also have a copy of Penelope' daughter's will. Her name was Mary Jane Kington.
