Obituary of Wayne Brown
LUGOFF - Family and friends are invited to share in a celebration of the life service for MSGT Wayne H. Brown, USAF (Ret”d) to be held Monday at 4:00 p.m. at Highway Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial to follow in W.W. Goff Cemetery, Jordan Road, Lugoff. Rev. Paul Miles, Rev. George Cashwell, and Rev. Brandon Goff will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home.
Wayne was born October 13, 1934 to Howell and Mamie Jeffers Brown, entered into eternal rest and was welcomed by the Lord on Saturday, April 4, 2009.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Doris Goff Brown; sons, Ricky (Janet) Brown and Dale Brown; grandson, Dallas (Heather) Brown; granddaughter, Ashley Blair Brown; great-grandsons, Isaac and Hunter Brown; great-granddaughter, Malaya Christine Brown; brother, Andrea (Peggy) Brown; sister, Lee (Aussie) Goff. He was predeceased by brother, Delmar Brown; and sister, Oneida Brown.
Wayne enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1953. He proudly served his country including tours of duty in England, Bahamas, and Japan. He excelled in the field of data processing with additional training in teaching instructions.
Being a gifted baseball player and leader, Wayne, nicknamed “Brownie” was a stand out in base level baseball as well as fast pitch softball and was a great asset to the team on and off the field. Wayne retired from the Air Force in 1974 with 21 years of distinguished service. Not satisfied with retirement, he employed his expertise in computers by teaching at Columbia Junior College followed by an extended teaching career at A-Tech in Camden. “Mr. Brown” loved by his students and known for his quick wit and engaging humor, brought a welcome appeal to learning in his classroom. After retiring from the South Carolina Education system, he together with his wife, Doris owned and operated D & W Choose and Cut Christmas Tree Farm in Kershaw County. Work on the tree farm was hard and very demanding, but the real “pay-off” was cheerful fellowship with the Christmas tree shoppers.
A historian with a particular interest in the Civil War and Native American Culture, his searching’s having produced an extensive collection of artifacts “Chiefly” arrowheads. Other interest includes being an avid Gamecock fan and leisure travel to the N.C., N.E. Georgia and Tennessee Mountains.
Mr. Wayne H. Brown’s commitment to family and country along with his non-discriminating love for all people has left an indullable impression on many, myself included. I am proud and blessed to call him my dad. He was a member of Highway Pentecostal Holiness Church and the American Legion Post 17.
