Obituary: Miller County Autogram-Sentinel, October 1944
Mrs. Roy Hawkins of the Brumley community who had been in failing health for several months, passed away at the Wallace Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, late Tuesday evening, Oct. 31. She had been a patient there for three weeks. Prior to this she was a patient at Latham Hospital in California, Mo. for two months. A major operation was performed a week ago. She had planned to return home last Sunday and her untimely death is indeed a shock to her loved ones and friends.
Sue Jones Hawkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manasseh Jones, was born in Iberia, Mo., Aug. 16, 1892. She was married to Roy Hawkins July 10, 1909. To them one son and two daughters were born.
Her father passed away March 14, 1904; also preceding her in death were three infant sisters, one seven-year-old sister, Retta, and one brother, Pearly, who died in 1918.
Surviving Mrs. Hawkins, besides her beloved husband, are her son, Reber Hawkins, of Ulman, Mo., and her two daughters, Norma Hawkins Hedges of Iberia, Mo., and Maudine Hawkins of the home. She leaves two grandchildren, Larry Hawkins and DeAnn Hedges. Besides these she leaves her loving mother, Mrs. Sarah Aust Jones of Iberia, Mo.; one sister, Miss Edna Jones of Iberia, and three brothers, Everett, Otto and Leslie Jones, all of Iberia; many other relatives and friends also are deeply grieved at her early passing.
Mrs. Hawkins was baptized and joined the Church of the Bretheren in Larned, Kans., Dec. 25, 1917. She placed her membership in Brumley Christian Church in Oct., 1930, where it remained until her death.
She was well known in Miller County and taught school in both Miller and Camden Counties. Hers was an active life. She carefully trained her children, taking them to Sunday school and church and teaching them the right way to live. She was a good and loving wife and mother, neighbor and friend. To know her was to love her. Hers was a life spent in loving sacrifice and served to her family and those about her. She was well prepared to lay down the mantle of life when God called her to "come home." Through her true Christian faith and life she has earned the reward God promises his children. Although she will be sadly missed by her loved ones and her passing is indeed a bitter and heavy cross to bear, we can but say to our Allwise Father, "Thy Will Be Done."
