Martha Jane Adams was born Nov 30, 1934 in Coles County, Illinois. She was the daughter of John Jefferson Adams and Martha Gammill of Charleston, Coles County, Illinois. Martha was the wife of Capt. Thomas Marion West, founding figure for the township of West, Texas. Martha was a Civil War widow following the death of her first husband, Thomas Steele.

Martha and Thomas West were married on Aug 9, 1866 in the area of McLennan County, that would later bear the West name. Martha and Thomas West were instrumental in the growth and development of West, Texas. They had seven children: Rosa B West, Thomas Jefferson West,George M. West, Benjamin Franklin West, Nannie West, Laura Bell West, and Florence Elizabeth West.
