Thomas Marion West was born Nov 5, 1834 in Christian County, Kentucky. His parents were William Ellis West and Narcissa E. Stroud of Christian County, Kentucky. Thomas was married to Martha Jane Adams Steele, a widow from the Civil War, Aug 9, 1866, in McLennan County, Texas.

Thomas Marion West, served in the Civil War in the 19th Texas Cavalry (Confederacy) and achieved the rank of Captain. Upon his return he married Martha Jane Adams Steele. He was a banker, merchant, and a farmer. Also was the first Postmaster for the town of West. Land that the City is built upon was granted by Thomas and his wife, Martha Jane Adams Steele, to the city of West. Thomas and Martha had 7 children: Rosa B West, George M.West,Jefferson Adams West, Nannie West, Benjamin Franklin West, Laura Bell West, and Florence Elizabeth West.
