Jason's obituary read: "Jason (Ben) Oscar Spencer, Oblong, son of Laura Belle and Jason Findley Spencer was born July 20, 1893, and passed away at 5:30 P.M. Thursday, December 20, 1973, at Crawford Memorial Hospital at the age of 80 years and five months. June 2, 1925, he was united in marriage to Agnes Alma Lynch and to this union six children were born.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and three brothers and is survived by his wife, a brother, George Spencer Mattoon; two sisters, Sophrona Wright, Lawerenceville and Bessie Hubbell, Charleston; a son, James Spencer, Boone, Iowa, and five daughters, Dora Littlejohn, Flat Rock, Goldie Spencer, Marjorie Spencer, and Lela Barnbrook all of Oblong and Ellen Slane, Robinson.

Mr. Spencer helped raise two grandchildren, Alma Vernia and Pansy Spencer, both of Robinson, who survive along with 23 other grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were conducted at the Marshall Funeral Home December 24 with Rev. Hugh Russell officiating. Interment followed in Oblong Cemetery with Oblong Legion Post 219 conducting military grave side rites." - Oblong Oracle, Oblong, IL
