Headstone Reads: FatherDuncan McArthur participated in the California gold rush of 1849. He found gold in Marysville and Calaveras County. He returned to the States with gold, bought a farm near Cedar Rapids, Iowa and married Freelove Lucore there in 1859. The McArthur family went to Montana Territory during the Montana gold rush and settled in Bozeman where their second child, Mary, was the first white child born in Bozeman. They returned to the States in 1868. In 1874 they moved to Georgetown, Colorado where Duncan engaged in mining in Clear Creek County. In 1895 they moved to Denver, but Duncan retained a cabin in Clear Creek County near Empire from which he pursued his mining interests. It was in that cabin in Miller Gulch that he died due to an apparent heart attack on May 27 or May 28, 1899.

Gravesite Details

Death date for Duncan McArthur is not entirely clear. He died in his mining cabin in Miller Gulch near Empire, Colorado. He was found on Sunday, May 28. Obit says that it appears he died of heart failure on May 27. Funeral card reads May 28.
