Sarah Wife of Joel Strong, died April 13, 1815, Aged 84 years. Recent family history research by James P. Lane reveals long-held discrepancies in past identifications of Sarah, and now indicates that she was most likely Sarah Loveland, the daughter of Robert and Dinah Loveland of Glastonbury, CT, and the sister of Robert Loveland, (1733-1795) who is also buried in the Main Road Cemetery. In the 1790 census Robert Loveland is listed below Joel Strong, Joel Strong Jun. and Stephen Bancroft. Contributed by Phyllis C Stehm, Descendant of Stephen Bancroft.
The information that follows hopes to correct mis-information about Sarah, wife of Joel. It was stated for many years... many decades, that Sarah was the daughter of Daniel Bascom & that her name was Sarah Eunice Bascom, but this is incorrect. Eunice Bascom was born in 1752 to Daniel & Mary Bliss Bascom, as the vital records of Lebanon, New London, CT, clearly show.
It is probable that Sarah was the dau. of Robert Loveland & Dinah Andrews. The birth of Sarah Loveland is recorded in the Barbour Collection, but is also found in the original town records of Glastonbury, CT, Vol. 1, pg. 85. Her brother Robert Loveland left Connecticut & settled in Granville, right next to Joel & Sarah Strong. This Sarah died in 1815 at 84 years of age, making a 1731 birth year a perfect fit for Sarah Loveland.
The marriage date of Sarah & Joel has not been found, but was probably in Connecticut, circa 1753, which is derived from the birth year of Sarah, their daughter.
Her death is recorded in the Vital Records of Granville, MA, pg. 228.
Three of the children of Sarah & Joel, namely, Jemima, Ruth & Eleazer, can be found in the original town records of Westfield, Hampden, MA, vol. 1, pg. 49. The other children, Sarah, Elizabeth, Irene & Joel Jr., have no known birth record, but, with the first three, are found in "The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong of Northampton, MA", Vol. 2, pg. 830, by Benjamin Dwight.

Gravesite Details
This is a very old cemetery on the north side of Rt 57, just west of Granville Center. This stone is in relatively good condition and still readable considering its age. I personally visited this cemetery in Oct. 2018. PC Stehm
