Highway Patrol Trooper Alanis died when he was hit by an intoxicated driver while making a routine traffic stop. Alanis had stopped a motorist he suspected was intoxicated. As he was interviewing the driver, another intoxicated driver crossed the roadway and sideswiped the violaters vehicle and hit Alanis. The Trooper was knocked 100 feet from the point of impact and died instantly.
Alanis was stationed in McAllen. Salvador Luna was charged with involuntary manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. He was convicted and sentenced to nine years in prison.
