She had originally served as a St John Ambulance volunteer in Serbia in 1914 but enlisted in the Serbian Army in 1915. She was later wounded by a grenade during hand to hand combat and due to her injuries was unable to return to the front and therefore spent the remainder of the war running a hospital. By the end of the First World War she had risen to the rank of Sergeant-Major and was later commissioned as a Captain. She was a recipient of Serbia's highest award the Order of the Star of Karađorđe and has a street named after her in Belgrade.

In May 1927 she married Colonel Yuri Yudenitch, a Russian émigré who had been a fellow officer and a former general in the White Army. They were both recalled to the military when Yugoslavia was invaded by the German Army in April 1941 but were soon interned by the Germans and subsequently released on parole. He soon fell ill and died in September 1941. She later returned to England to live in Wickham Market and subsequently died in the East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital (Anglesea Road Wing).

Daughter of the Reverend Samuel Dickson Sandes (1822–1914) and Sophia Julia (née Besnard) Sandes(?-1911).
