Huitau Lapriel Allred Johnson
1915 ~ 2008
Huitau was born in New Zealand while her parents were serving a work mission. She was given the Maori name Huitau to be used while in New Zealand, to be replaced by Lapriel later. However, a concerned aunt bribed her with 50 cents to retain the strange name. Her name has been a distinction throughout her life and has caused no serious regrets of the decision.
As a child she lived mostly in Lehi with brief sojourns in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Syracuse, Utah. She had early schooling in Syracuse and Lehi and graduated from the BYU with the baccalaureate degree in English and Physical Education. She taught high school at Monroe and Kamas, Utah. During World War II she did secretarial work at Fort Douglas and in Los Angeles. During the LA term she boarded at the famous Braun House and there met Arlo who was to become her husband for 60 years. Together they spent three years at Stanford, CA, two years in Indonesia where Arlo taught at the Technical Institute in Bandung, Java. They also spent eight months in New Zealand, again on a teaching assignment in Christchurch. Huitau and Arlo and four children enjoyed a world
circling trip which culminated in a three month camping trip through
Europe.
Huitau has stressed musical education of her children, who are Chris (Sue), Marc (Jana), Scott (Kathy) and Coleen Bennett (Grant). There are presently 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Huitau, as a member of the LDS Church has held numerous executive positions in auxiliaries. She is an avid reader, specializing in knowledge of children's literature.
Huitau has exhibited a sweet, accepting nature right through her final years. We rejoice in her release and call to a higher realm.
