Mary was a sweetheart of William Seward. Seward's father was an important politician in New York. They lived in the Finger Lakes part of New York. Seward had a disagreement with his father. He took his money, went to New York City, caught a sea ship to Savannah, took a boat to Augusta, and then took a stage as far as his money would take him, which turned out to be Putnam County, Georgia. There he was able to get a job as the schoolmaster. He met and fell in love with Mary. When Seward asked for her hand in marriage, her father rejected him, saying he was a ne'er do well. Seward's heart was broken and he returned to his home in New York. He later became the governor of New York and Secretary of State for Abraham Lincoln. Seward is famous for his purchase of Alaska from Russia, infamously referred to at the time as "Seward's Icebox."
