The son of Henry & Sarah (Boyle) Bodder, in 1850 he was living with his family in Unity Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. By 1860, he was a blacksmith by trade but is not found with certainty in that census. He stood 5' 10" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Latrobe, Westmoreland County, August 27, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 9 as a private with Co. C, 11th Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted to sergeant, date as yet unknown, he re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864, at Cedar Mountain, Virginia. Although promoted to 2nd lieutenant to date June 30, 1865, he never mustered at the rank and honorably discharged with his company the following day (July 1, 1865). His obituary in Chambersburg's Public Weekly Opinion et al erroneously claim he rose to the rank of 1st lieutenant but never mention the company and regiment in which he served.

He married Sarah Ann Fahnstock December 20, 1865, in Chambersburg and fathered Daniel Smith (b. 02/01/67). He died suddenly from an apparent heart attack and had been a member of Chambersburg's Housum Post No. 309, G.A.R.
