Adam's parents were Charles Ludwig Knapp and Maria Eleonora Martin a farming family in Monroe, Michigan. He had 3 sisters and 4 brothers. In 1876 he married Mary E. Farwell and together they had one child Irving. After Mary's death in 1877, Adam married Katherine (Catherine) Mathis in 1878 and they were the parents of 2 sons and 2 daughters. During his life Adam only used the last name of Knab on his second marriage certificate and on his headstone. All other times especially on the census records from 1860 until his death in 1888 he used the name of Knapp.
